Purpose: The PFA-100 (platelet function analyzer) is a relatively new tool for the investigation of primary hemostasis. The PFA-100 has potential utility in monitoring antiplatelet therapy (including aspirin) and as a screening tool for investigating possible von Willebrand disease (VWD) and various platelet disorders. We performed this study to reconfirm preanalytical variables on Closure time (CT) in our laboratory. .
Material and Methods: Closure times with the PFA-100 system were determined for the Collagen/ADP (CADP) in 156 patients and the Collagen/Epinephrine (CEPI) cartridges in 119 patients. The reference ranges of CT were 61-110 sec of CADP and 81-192 sec of CEPI. We analyzed preanalytical effects of gender, age, Hct an platelet counts.
Results: Hct levels over 40 year group are significantly lower than younger group in CEPI-CT group (P=0.030). Platelet counts over 40 year group are significantly lower than younger group in CEPI-CT group, especially normal CEPI-CT group (P=0.002 and 0.001, respectively). The gender, age, Hct and platelet counts are not significantly different in CADP-CT group.
Conclusion: We confirmed the preanalytical variables of PFA-CT and recommended the comment for effect of Hct and platelet count in the reporting sheets.
